New book by Timothy Snyder on sale!

A collection titled ‘Politics of Life and Death’ is published on the occasion of the award of the Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Foundation VIZE 97. It is a selection of the laureate’s short texts published in journals and collective monographs, in print and on the Internet. Already, you can order it from our website.

The collection contains four studies, a text that can be termed a review, and six journalistic essays. It is only a selection from the author’s body of work. Several essays reflect a discussion sparked by the publication of Bloodlands. Although they were published in different contexts and are targeted at different auditoriums, as a whole they reveal the background of the creation of Bloodlands and explain it. They include an article titled Commemorative Causality examining ways in which present-day commemoration of the victims of the Holocaus influences historiography. Likewise, the study Memory of sovereignty and sovereignty over memory analyses on the example of Polish-Lithuanian and Polish-Ukrainian relations how politicians come to terms with this historical burden. The journalistic essays in the second part of the collection are the author’s response to the current situation (most relate to the events in Ukraine over the last two years). Some facts on which they are based are already outdated but they point to the linkage between history and current events.
